Contributions to Idaho Nonprofits Raise All Boats

Encouragement from Janice Fulkerson, Executive Director

Last week, an editorial titled “Philanthropy Envy” ran in the Wall Street Journal. In part, the story concerned criticism that was leveled at a generous contributor for giving money to a particular organization in Massachusetts. As I’ve traveled throughout our state and witnessed hundreds of donations and grants to various nonprofits, I have not heard negative comments such as this. If anything, other nonprofit leaders are gracious and grateful for contributions made to any and all Idaho nonprofits – not just those that fund their own mission.

We can celebrate that our communities believe in the power of our ‘nonprofit sea’ and know that a contribution to any organization raises all boats. That’s just one of many reasons I’m so happy to be part of the nonprofit community in our great state.

Grant Opportunities

The Maki Foundation, named for the Lakota (Sioux) word for land, ground or earth, focuses its grants on environmental protection in the Western United States. Priority is given to projects and programs that protect and preserve the Rocky Mountain West’s remaining wild lands, rivers, and wilderness, as well as the wildlife that depends on these lands.

Nonprofit organizations in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana are eligible to apply. Additional information can be found on the Web site: http://www.makifoundation.org/ or by calling 970-925-3272.

The Whittenberger Foundation is now accepting applications from Southwest Idaho for grants to be given in early December of 2015. The Foundation currently gives priority to innovative and enriching projects which significantly improve the quality of life for children and young people.

Application deadline is August 15. Forms and further information are available on the website at www.whittenberger.org.
