Message from Janice

Encouragement from Janice Fulkerson, Executive Director

Do you have a small splurge in your office that you really enjoy? Mine is the Harvard Business Review (HBR). When the new HBR comes each month, I immediately scan the magazine for nuggets of information and then find 30-45 minutes to read it quietly in my office.

The November 2015 issue published a section on Digital Customer Engagement, including the Science of Customer Emotions. The article content is about connecting with individuals on an emotional level to motivate action. While the article focused on purchasing goods and services, there are valuable concepts that can be translated to connecting with donors, advocates, and community supporters. Like many HBR articles, it concludes with a summary and next steps to get started.

First: Inventory your existing research and customer (donor/supporter) data. Remember, the Idaho Nonprofit Center has data that you may use to supplement yours.

Second: Analyze your best customers, those who buy and advocate the most, are the least price-sensitive, and most loyal.

Third: Make the organization's commitment to emotional connection a key lever for growth. Nonprofit organizations have great stories, services and more to use in making the emotional connections.

The January-February 2016 issue is about embracing complexity and the secret of Superbosses. Can't wait to dive into this issue.

Thanks for the great work you do every day!
