Organizational Integrity and Nonprofits

Encouragement from Janice Fulkerson, Executive Director

Developing and managing organizational integrity is important to all companies, including charitable nonprofits. Establishing an integrity-based culture builds trust with donors, volunteers, constituents, and the community. An internet search for organizational integrity will result in ethics, governance, compliance, and other topics that can be incorporated in core values. Core values and how an organization demonstrates them often begins when a new individual joins the team. Are new staff, board members, and volunteers being introduced to the organizations core values in an orientation? Beyond being introduced to them, are new team members asked to agree they can support the core values?

Background checks are a great tool to ensure a culture of organizational integrity. I've seen three stories in the media this month about nonprofits with unfortunate allegations. Each time I found myself asking "I wonder if they conduct background checks?". Protecting your organization, employees and recipients of your services can begin with a simple background check. They are becoming more affordable and available, and let those joining your organization know integrity is critical to your mission.

Call the Idaho Nonprofit Center if you need a referral to a vendor for background checks.
