Getting a Job in the Nonprofit Sector

Nearly weekly I receive an inquiry from someone seeking information about employment in the nonprofit sector. The conversation may be with a student just starting their career path; with a seasoned executive making a switch; or with a retiree hoping to apply decades of corporate skills to a nonprofit to make a difference. I always point them to our job board and then talk to them about their motivation, their skills, and their passion, with a focus on blending their need for paycheck with their need to have purpose.

Finding employment in the nonprofit sector requires the same job search skills as finding a meaningful employment match in any sector. Additional opportunities in the nonprofit sector for job seekers may also include volunteering, joining a board, and direct engagement to learn more about the various sub-sectors.

Nonprofit missions and brand can be powerful in attracting talent. A recovering economy does mean the marketplace for talent is more competitive. Yet nonprofit organizations have the ability to offer a dynamic work place, to allow employees to work across the organization, to use technology and social media, and much more to keep and retain talent.

With college graduates getting nonprofit minors, and new generations seeking careers that support a cause, is it time for nonprofits to change their approach to recruiting and hiring? How can the blending of paycheck and purpose be used to recruit the best talent to the sector? These are complex questions I encourage you to consider in your own organization and discuss with your colleagues during the statewide annual conference.

Considering the evolution of branding in today’s sophisticated and very social world, most savvy business leaders know that brand is not just a logo. In fact we have come so far that most corporate leaders understand the visual identity of your brand is only a small part of the whole brand experience. Brand goes deeper than the visual expression of it and is critical to your overall business strategy. So then, what exactly is brand and how can nonprofits benefit from this perspective and understanding?

Brand is a perception.
Brand is the gut feeling we get when we think of an organization, product or service. Brand guru, Marty Neumeier who coined that phrase is also famous for saying, “brand is not what you say it is, it is what they say it is”. Yep, the external world decides what your brand is and although that is intimidating, there is a lot you can do to help shape that perception. Read more.


Featured Grant

The Whittenberger Foundation - Submission are due by August 15th!

The Whittenberger Foundation is now accepting applications from Southwest Idaho for grants to be given in early December of 2015. The Foundation currently gives priority to innovative and enriching projects which significantly improve the quality of life for children and young people. Areas of interest relating to children and young people are education, arts and culture, health, social welfare, recreation and the environment. An applicant must be either a qualified public institution or an institution which has received tax-exempt status under Section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code. Individual teachers need the signature approval or their principal or superintendent to apply. Application deadline is August 15. Forms and further information are available on the website at www.whittenberger.org.
